Angelo "Grandpa"
Casali
was born in the small town of Licata, Sicily on Oct. 10, 1910.
He started working as an apprentice at a local bakery
at the age of 9, and developed a passion for the pastry profession.
Throughout the years Grandpa became progressively more successful
and decided to finally open up a shop of his own after he
returned from the war in 1946. His bakery became the
most extravagant bakery the town had ever seen.
In
1958, Grandpa decided to visit his brother Vincenzo in the
U.S. and immediately fell in love with New York. Soon
after arriving, Grandpa began his first job in N.Y. at Ferrara
Café in Little Italy, where he ultimately became the
Head Baker. Training many of his fellow bakers on Long
Island, Grandpa soon became known as "Toscano" (because
of his family's history).
His
passion, knowledge and high-standards were passed to his own...
his son Angelo, and nephew Giuseppe (Joe). Today Angelo
and Giuseppe (Joe) are the proud owners of A & G Bakery.
With two locations on Long Island, they adhere to using
only the best and purest ingredients. Still, today the
pastries are baked from Grandpa's original recipes and are
made from scratch... including one of our best... the Cannoli
shells!
